Trader jailed for stealing bag of sugar, groundnut oil

A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday sentenced a 24-year- old trader, Mohammed Kazeem, to six months imprisonment for breaking into a house and stealing a bag of sugar, groundnut oil, a DVD player, two cellphone chargers and other valuables.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, convicted Kazeem of Malali Kaduna,who was charged with two counts of burglary and stealing.

Emmanuel, however, gave him an option to pay N10, 000 fine, after he begged for mercy, saying that he was a first time offender

He also ordered convict to pay the sum of N100,000 as compensation to the complainant and warned him to desist from committing crime.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, said the complainant, Musa Usman of same address with the convict, reported the case on Nov. 5, at the Divisional Police Station.

According to Leo, on the same date at about 9 p.m, the complainant returned home and discovered that unknown persons criminally trespassed into his compound and stole from his apartment.

The prosecutor told the court that the complainant told the police that he suspected the convict, who at the time was at large.

Leo told the court that when police detectives investigated and arrested the convict , they found some of the stolen items in his possession.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 351 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Laws, 2017.
