At least five people including a child were confirmed dead and 40 others injured in a powerful blast that rocked Afghan capital Kabul on Monday evening.

The blast, according to a spokesman for Interior Ministry, Najib Danesh, was a car bomb that targeted Police District 9 area of the capital. He could not provide more details.

However, an official who declined to be named said that a car bomb targeted Green village, a fortified area in the Police District 9 on the Kabul-Jalalabad road at around 07: 00 p.m. local time.

Xinhua reports that Green village is a well-protected area next to the main office of Afghan election commission in the eastern edge of Kabul city often frequented by foreigners living in Kabul.

Meantime, Wahidullah Mayar, the spokesman for Public Health Ministry, confirmed that 40 injured persons had been taken to hospitals.

Independent sources said that casualties could be higher than reported.
