The National Union of Zamfara State Students (NUZAMSS) has conferred a Merit Award on Mr Abdulrazak Bello, the acting chairman of the Zamfara state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in recognition of his contributions to education.

Speaking at the award presentation in Gusau on Sunday, the NUZAMSS National President, Mubarak Garba, said that Bello was chosen because of his “immense contributions to the development of the education sector in the state.”

He said that Bello had assisted some students morally and financially to pursue their academic careers.

He said, “This award is in consideration of your selfless commitment and service towards promoting education at all levels.

“You have done so through your moral and financial assistance to students in the state and Nigeria in general,” he said.

Garba urged the NUJ acting chairman not to relent in his efforts aimed at supporting students in the state.

The award was presented to the recepient by Mr Lukman Majidadi, the Zonal Vice President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).

Responding, Bello said his passion for education came from his background as a former classroom teacher.

He assured the students that he would continue to support education in all his activities, saying that education remained the bedrock of any society.

“As a teacher, because once a teacher is always a teacher, I will continue to associate myself with NUZAMSS in all its activities,” he said.

He, however, warned the students to shun cultism, drug abuse and other negative tendencies, saying that such vices would lead to destruction.
