4 arraigned in court for cultism

Four suspected secret cult members: Afariogun Shakiru, 18; Sunday Olawale,19; Moruf Bankole, 18 and Saheed Bankole, 15 on Wednesday, appeared in an Ota Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

The accused are facing trial on a three-count charge of membership of unlawful society, conspiracy and breach of peace to which they pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Abdulkareem Mustapha, said that the accused and others still at large, committed the offence on Jan. 18, 2.00 a.m. in Masafejo Junction, Ilogbo, Ota. Area of Ota.

Mustapha also told the court that the accused and others belong to a society identified as “Aiye Confraternity.”

He said that the accused also conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by lunching attack with dangerous weapon such as black axe on the people of Masafejo Village, Ota.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 249 (d), 430 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Mathew Akinyemi, in his ruling, granted each of the accused N300,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

Akinyemi said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed.

“In addition, the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government as part of the bail conditions,” Akinyemi ordered.

He adjourned hearing on the matter to Feb. 14.
