As the world observes the fifth anniversary of the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, it is imperative to urge the Nigerian government to take decisive action. The continued captivity of over 100 of these innocent girls serves as a poignant indication of the government’s inadequacy in ensuring the safety of its citizens, especially its youth.

In April 2014, Boko Haram fighters infiltrated the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, resulting in the abduction of 276 girls. While some individuals have escaped or have been liberated, a significant number remain in captivity, where they face forced marriages, sexual violence, and various forms of abuse¹.

The Nigerian government must intensify its efforts to secure the safe release and return of the remaining Chibok schoolgirls. This includes sustaining negotiations with Boko Haram, alongside implementing preventative measures to safeguard schools and communities from future abductions.

Amnesty International has reported at least 17 instances of mass kidnappings, during which over 1,700 children were taken from their educational institutions and subjected to severe maltreatment¹. The organization also highlighted that 20 Chibok women rescued in recent years have been coerced into marrying former Boko Haram fighters.

The Nigerian authorities are obligated to fulfil their national and international human rights responsibilities by urgently reinforcing initiatives to ensure the safe liberation and repatriation of not only the Chibok girls but all individuals held hostage by armed groups throughout Nigeria.

As we commemorate the anniversary of these tragic events, the Nigerian government needs to devise a comprehensive and effective strategy aimed at protecting schools and children. Additionally, there must be a concerted emphasis on assisting girls who have escaped or been rescued from Boko Haram in their efforts to rebuild their lives.

The period of superficial promises must conclude. The Nigerian government must act with urgency to ensure the release of the Chibok girls and to prevent any other child from enduring a similar plight.
