The death toll from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Africa reached 1,959 on Wednesday, as the confirmed cases hit 49,352.

The Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in its latest situation update said confirmed cases jumped by 2,234.

Tuesday’s tally was 47,118.

The virus has so far spread into 53 African countries.

Africa CDC said 16,315 people have recovered across the continent, an increase of 726 over Tuesday’s total of 15,589.

The death toll due to the COVID-19 increased from 1,843 on Tuesday afternoon to 1,959 on Wednesday.

South Africa leads the continent with 7,572 confirmed cases.

Egypt follows with 7,201, while Morocco is third with 5,219 confirmed cases.

Algeria is fourth with 4,838 confirmed cases, figures from Africa CDC said.
