Tupocracy is gaining more grounds in Nigeria as Enugu State has adopted the political principle as a guiding principle. Leadership by example refers to a leadership style in which leaders demonstrate their values, work ethic, and behavior through their actions, setting a positive example for others to follow. This approach can have a significant impact on organizational culture, employee motivation, and overall performance.

Overall, adopting Tupocracy in Enugu State is a positive step towards building a strong and ethical leadership culture. It can contribute to improved governance, enhanced public trust, and increased effectiveness in achieving the state’s goals.
Tupocracy was coined out and presented as a Doctoral Thesis in the University of Nigeria NSUKKA in 2006 by Dr. Godwin Akpan Amaowoh. Ever since, it has grown momentum nationwide as notable scholars have used it in their speeches.
A highly respected Professor of Agriculture with the University of Calabar; Professor Abayomi Onanuga once said “Tupocracy was discovered by a fellow Nigerian and it is the solution to Nigeria’s challenges and problems if only we can practice it as a system of government”
Also, several other scholars have spoken and have endorsed Tupocracy as a political doctrine that is here to stay.
Tupocracy will have several significant benefits for Enugu State and its residents. Here are some additional points to consider:
1. Trust and credibility: When leaders consistently demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior, they earn the trust and respect of the people they lead. This trust is crucial for effective governance, as it fosters cooperation, collaboration, and open communication between leaders and citizens.
2. Improved performance and productivity: When leaders lead by example, they set high standards for performance and productivity. By consistently demonstrating a strong work ethic and dedication to their responsibilities, leaders inspire their teams and employees to do the same. This can lead to increased productivity, efficiency, and overall performance within government agencies, departments, and public services.
3. Enhanced accountability: Leadership by example promotes a culture of accountability. When leaders hold themselves to the same standards they expect from others, it sends a powerful message that no one is above the rules or exempt from responsibility. This can help reduce corruption, favoritism, and unethical practices, leading to a more accountable and transparent government.
4. Positive organizational culture: Leadership by example shapes the organizational culture within government institutions. When leaders lead with integrity, respect, and professionalism, it sets the tone for the entire organization. Employees are more likely to feel valued, motivated, and engaged when they see their leaders embodying the values they promote.
5. Citizen engagement: Leadership by example can inspire and engage citizens to actively participate in the development and progress of Enugu State. When leaders demonstrate a commitment to public service, ethical decision-making, and community involvement, it encourages citizens to follow suit. This can lead to increased civic engagement, volunteerism, and a sense of ownership among residents.
6. Attracting investment and development: Enugu State’s adoption of leadership by example can positively impact its reputation and attractiveness to investors, businesses, and development partners. When leaders are known for their integrity, transparency, and effective governance, it instills confidence in potential investors and creates an environment conducive to economic growth and development.
It’s important to note that leadership by example is an ongoing process that requires consistent effort and commitment from leaders at all levels. By embracing this approach, Enugu State can create a culture of leadership that inspires positive change, fosters trust, and promotes the well-being of its residents.
Lady Phumla, a prominent member of the ACUP declared that
“Leaders who lead by example act with integrity and honesty in all their dealings. They adhere to ethical standards and demonstrate consistency between their words and actions.”
Projecting into the future, with the widespread acceptance of Tupocracy in Nigeria and b amongst young emerging leaders in Africa, it most likely going to become a major political doctrine for our future world where we will have leaders who lead by example.
