Saxophonist Lekan Animashaun, popularly known as Baba Ani who just clocked 85 years of age, was celebrated by his friends and family at an event in Igando, Lagos on Thursday.
The series of events lined up to celebrate him started on Sunday, 15 August, at the Freedom Park, followed by a symposium organised by Jahman Anikulapo and CORA team.
The two topics discussed were “Nigeria’s Socio-Political and economic challenges: Way out of the logjam” and “Music as a weapon for socio-political development”.
The discussants were Debo Adeniran, Anti-corruption advocate, Afolabi Gbajumo, civil society activist, Professor Dele Seteolu, Department of political science, LASU, Lanre Arogundade, civil society activist, Babajide Kolade Otitoju, TV journalist and Seun Olota, culture advocate.
Baba Ani also launched a foundation that will assist upcoming musicians.
Some members of Fela’s Egypt 80 band were also in attendance.
Ambassador Ayoola Olukanni, former High Commissioner of Nigeria to Australia was the chairman of the event.
