Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has described the late wife of the first Nigerian military Head of State, Mrs Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi as one who left a good legacy for her family and the entire Umuahia community of Abia State.

This disclosure came, even as the former President paid a condolence visit to the wife and children of the former military administrator of Oyo State, Adetunji Olurin at Parkview, Ikoyi Lagos at the weekend.

Mrs Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi died at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Abia state in the early hours of Monday, aged 97 years.

In a condolence message by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo said the death of Mrs Ironsi “is a big loss, not only to her immediate Aguiyi-Ironsi family, the entire Umuahia community in Abia State and country, but also to those close to her” including himself.

“It is with a profound sense of sympathy that I receive the passing to eternal glory of Mrs Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, who was the matriarch of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family after the demise of Gen. Ironsi.”

Obasanjo said the late Community leader had held the family together all this years, saying: “therefore her departure will be a great loss to the entire family of Aguiyi-Ironsi and to the Umuahia community in general.

“And, may the family take consolation in the fact that their mother left a very good legacy, as a good mother, a good wife, a good community leader and a good Christian, that can be regarded as a woman of virtue.

“Those of us who are also close to the family also have a sense of loss. But, we only take consolation that in the fact that Victoria left a good legacy.”

Obasanjo had on Sunday, paid a condolence visit to the Olurin’s wife, Kehinde and her children at their Ikoyi residence over the death of their father, Gen. Adetunji Olurin, who died last Friday.

He described Olurin as one of the patriotic Nigerians that served his country diligently and faithfully.

Obasanjo said that the death of Olurin was a personal loss to him, having shown great loyalty and commitment to any assignment given.

He said that Olurin’s dexterity and successful performance while in service resulted in the appointments both as military administrator and ECOMOG field Commander respectively.

Obasanjo, recalled that the choice of Olurin as the PDP candidate in 2011 Ogun State governorship election was not unconnected with his impressive antecedents in both public and private services, which could not materialise by the outcome of the election.

Obasanjo prayed that the Almighty God would grant the immediate and extended family all the succour as well as the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace and may God console his family, friends and peers,” Obasanjo was quoted as having said.
