NCDC DG Chikwe Ihekweazu reports new COVID-19 cases

Nigeria on Wednesday recorded 637 new cases of COVID-19 and seven deaths, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said.

The new infections increased Nigeria’s caseload to 188,880 out of 2,727,834 million samples tested.

Nigeria’s death toll has now increased to 2,288.

According to the NCDC, the discharged stood at 169,382, including the 347 who recovered on Wednesday.

The new infections from 18 states, were slightly lower than the 655 cases reported on Tuesday.

NCDC reported a surge of the Delta variant in five states.

It thus cautioned Nigerians that the variant is much more contagious than previous versions of COVID-19.

It advised unvaccinated people to get vaccinated.

“Everyone in areas of substantial/ high transmission should wear a mask, even if vaccinated.”

The public health agency did not indicate if majority of the known active cases were from the contagious Delta variant.
