A record 53 people died of COVID-19 on Saturday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control announced today.

The death toll was the highest ever to be recorded in a day since February last year, when the COVID-19 pandemic began.

According to the NCDC, the deaths were backlogs for Lagos State from 4th August 2021.

The new deaths jacked Nigeria’s death toll to 2361.

Lagos has now recorded 525 people dead out of 72,245 cases of the virus.

It also still has 5,159 active COVID-19 cases out of the national total of 10, 575.

The NCDC also reported 650 new COVID cases for Saturday, which increased the caseload to 190,983.

So far, 178,047 cases have been discharged.

The agency said active cases of COVID-19 dropped from 18,210, reported on Friday to 10,575, reported on Saturday.

It didn’t explain the big drop.
