City celebrate their victory

Ruthless Manchester City hit demolished Leipzig 6-3 on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium in a champions league match.

It was the home side who took an early lead, as Nathan Aké leapt above a glut of lurking Leipzig defenders to head home from a corner in emphatic fashion just 15 minutes into the match.

Things quickly got worse for the German outfit, as centre-back Nordi Mukiele headed the ball into his own net from close range soon after, giving Manchester City a 2-0 lead after 27 minutes.

Fortunately for Jesse Marsch’s men, a well-worked combination in the box found the head of Christopher Nkunku, who nodded the ball behind Ederson to cut the deficit in half just four minutes before the half time whistle.

However, their joy was short-lived, as a handball in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Citizens on the stroke of half time, which was ferociously slotted home by Riyad Mahrez to reclaim the two goal lead.

Yet again, Leipzig responded well with an early goal in the second half, and it was déjà vu for the City defenders, who left Nkunku alone in the penalty area.

Hardly able to believe his luck, the midfielder calmly headed the ball home to cut City’s lead in half for the second time in the match.

Once again, the English champions responded quickly, as a scintillating solo goal from £100m man Jack Grealish restored City’s advantage, but the drama did not stop there.

On 73 minutes, Nkunku completed his hat-trick, only for City’s Joao Cancelo to respond moments later with a superb strike from outside of the box. The new 5-3 scoreline was swiftly followed by a red card for Leipzig full-back Angeliño on his return to the Etihad.

A late Gabriel Jesus goal would cap off the dramatic evening at the Etihad, and put an extra degree of panache on City’s now 18-game run of Champions League group stage victories.

As for Nkunku, he gains a degree of distinction despite the result, having made himself the fourth man this century to score a Champions League hat-trick but still find himself on the losing side.
