Protest rock Bayelsa over death of armed robbery suspect in police custody

Residents of the Biogbolo community in Bayelsa State have come out in their numbers to protest the death of one Goodluck Oviekeme.

The protesters blocked the ever busy Melford Okilo expressway to protest Goodluck’s death.

He died in the custody of the police.

Goodluck was reportedly arrested by the police on Wednesday.

Report of his death emerged on Friday while in police custody.

According to a statement by the Bayelsa Police command on Saturday, Goodluck was arrested in connection to a robbery case that occurred on Tuesday, 21 September.

Asinim Butswat the PPRO of the command, Goodluck and other hoodlums attacked the police patrol team on the day of the robbery incident and fatally injured a police inspector, Ugbotor Sunday and stole his rifle.

Goodluck was said to be the mastermind of the attack.

Goodluck after his arrest according to the police report was observed to be running high temperature and was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died.

Ebitonye Michael, his brother, however, denied the police allegations insisting his late brother was innocent.

According to him, men of the Police special squad arrested Oviekeme on Wednesday over a crime he did not commit.

He alleged that Oviekeme was murdered in the police cell and his body was later dumped at the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Yenagoa.

Protesters, however, for hours barricaded roads in the community, leaving commuters stranded and halting business operation in the area.
