Gunmen have reportedly killed Dr. John Chike Akunyili, husband of late Information Minister and NAFDAC DG, Prof. Dora Akunyili.
He was killed at Umuoji in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State on Tuesday evening.
The medical doctor, who marked his 70th birthday last November, was heading for Enugu, where he was the chief medical director of St Leo Hospital.
He was shot dead after attending an event at Onitsha, where the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA) honoured his wife posthumously.
The circumstances of his murder were still sketchy as he left the Onitsha event, with his son, Obumneme, who works with the Anambra government.
He was driving a Prado.
His brother Cyril Akunyili claimed in a Facebook post that Chike was shot by IPOB militants.
“IPOB killed my senior brother. Why?. Husband of Professor Dora Akunyili is dead. IPOB Why on a Tuesday”.
But the post has disappeared from Chike’s page.
Chike Akunyili’s wife Dora died in 2014 at the age of 59.
He is survived by six children and several grandchildren. One of the children is Njideka Crosby, a famous artist based in Los Angeles, United States.
