Independence day: Akeredolu grants 18 prisoners amnesty

Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu has said Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State is currently incapacitated and receiving treatment abroad. Akeredolu is understand to be suffering from leukemia and has been off duty for over a month to attend to his health.  But Adamu at a meeting between the national leadership of the party and APC state chairmen, said the governor is incapacitated. “We regret to announce the extreme incapacity of the Governor of Ondo state who we understand has been hospitalised overseas. We wish and pray for him for a speedy recovery,” Adamu was quoted as saying by Daily Trust. He also said the list of ministers to serve in the government of President Bola Tinubu was not ready as the president is still consulting wide to get the best team. According to him, Tinubu had just begun "and he is doing his extensive consultation before coming up with his nominees for ministers." He said the nomination of the ministers would come first, adding that "They will go through their screening until they are pronounced after they have been submitted by Mr. President. And Mr President will formally appoint his Ministers and swear them in."

Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu has granted state pardon to 18 convicts as part of celebrations of Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary.

Richard Olatunde, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, announced this in a statement noting that the governor also commuted to life imprisonment 26 other inmates on death row.

“In exercise of the powers conferred on him by paragraph (d) of sub-section (1) of Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as Amended, Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has granted State pardon to 18 convicted inmates.

“The Governor also committed to life imprisonment 26 other inmates who were condemned to death by the various courts in the state. The convicts were released having shown remorse and are of good conduct at the correctional centres,” the statement read.

The governor urged the pardoned inmates to be of good behavior and live a crime-free life. He also urged members of the public not to discriminate against the pardoned inmates as they reintegrate into the society.
