Popular Afrobeats artist Mustapha Sulaiman Danazunmi known as Mustee teamed up with Laycon, rapper and winner of Big Brother Naija season 5, to release a collaborative track titled “Lobe.”
The song quickly garnered attention as Mustee’s second single off his Afrobeats EP, ‘Sounds from the Lungu,’ a project that continues to define his unique style and approach to contemporary African music.
Mustee, who has steadily been carving out a name for himself in the Nigerian music scene, was already building a solid foundation with his Afro-influenced sound.
His EP, ‘Sounds from the Lungu,’ showcased his ability to blend traditional African rhythms with modern production techniques, creating a sound that feels both familiar and innovative.
For “Lobe,” Mustee sought to elevate his sound by featuring Laycon, an artist who had quickly risen to prominence with his witty lyricism, versatility, and star power following his Big Brother Naija win.
Laycon brought a unique dynamic to “Lobe.” Known for his smooth delivery and relatable lyrics, he provided a perfect counterbalance to Mustee’s laid-back yet rhythmic vocals. Together, the two artists crafted a track that captures the essence of modern Afrobeats while maintaining a distinctly authentic African vibe.
“Lobe” is a melodic, mid-tempo Afrobeats track that showcases the strengths of both Mustee and Laycon. The title, which loosely translates to “Love,” touches on themes of romance, attraction, and the complexities of relationships. Mustee’s smooth delivery sets the tone for the track, with his sultry vocals capturing the attention of the listener from the start. Laycon’s verse further complements the song, adding depth with his clever wordplay and emotional resonance.
The production of “Lobe” features the quintessential elements of Afrobeats: infectious drum patterns, a steady groove, and intricate percussion, all layered with rich melodies. These elements, combined with Mustee’s and Laycon’s performances, make the song a standout track on ‘Sounds from the Lungu.’
Sounds From The Lungu EP
“Lobe” is a significant part of ‘Sounds from the Lungu,’ Mustee’s sophomore effort that brings together different sonic landscapes from Africa’s rich music tradition. The EP blends traditional and modern African sounds, with Mustee exploring a range of themes from love and heartbreak to societal issues. By tapping into the “lungu” (a colloquial term often used in urban areas to describe hidden or less-known spaces), Mustee reflects the stories of the everyday Nigerian and the nuanced experiences of those often living on the fringes of society.
With “Lobe” as a standout track, the EP demonstrates Mustee’s versatility as an artist, proving that he can hold his own in both romantic ballads and socially conscious narratives. ‘Sounds of the Lungu’ pushes the boundaries of the Afrobeats genre by introducing a more intimate and introspective sound, all while maintaining the infectious beats and rhythms that define the genre.
Upon its release, “Lobe” quickly gained traction, with fans of both Mustee and Laycon praising the collaboration. The song was celebrated for its catchy hook, smooth rhythm, and the undeniable chemistry between the two artists. Laycon’s involvement in the track undoubtedly drew significant attention, given his skyrocketing fame post-Big Brother Naija, but Mustee’s unique sound and vocal performance ensured that he remained the focus.
The success of “Lobe” also highlighted Mustee’s growing influence in the Afrobeats scene. His ability to collaborate with major artists like Laycon while staying true to his distinct sound solidified his reputation as one of the genre’s emerging talents to watch.
Mustee’s “Lobe” featuring Laycon is more than just a feel good song; it is a showcase of Mustee’s artistic growth and a testament to his potential in the Afrobeats space. The track highlights his ability to craft songs that resonate with a wide audience, blending romance, rhythm, and lyrical depth. As part of his ‘Sounds from the Lungu’ EP, “Lobe” plays a key role in introducing Mustee’s unique voice to a broader audience, while simultaneously demonstrating his ability to collaborate with top-tier talent like Laycon.
