Ibrahim David Salami, one of the lawyers of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho has said that sending the activist back to Nigerian would mean certain death.
He spoke with AFP on Saturday.
Salami said Igboho is safer in Benin Republic than in Nigeria.
According to him, Igboho “is not at all safe in Nigeria. Sending him to Nigeria means certain death.”
He said what they feared initially was an extradition request by the Nigerian government, but that there was no such demand.
Salami added that the fact that he was being investigated for a violation that could have been committed on Beninese territory was a hurdle to an extradition request as this case would first have to be sorted out.
Igboho fled Nigeria after the Department of State Services, DSS, invaded his house in July, killed two of his aides and arrested 12 others.
He was arrested in Benin Republic as he was fleeing to Germany with his wife, Ropo.
Igboho was detained and brought to court, only for the judge to send him to prison.
The Yoruba activist had been in Benin prison for close to three months now.
