Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has directed that all contestants seeking for position in the All Progressive Congress APC’s state congress scheduled for Saturday to report at the office of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for a mandatory drug test.
The directive was part of measures to rid the state of illicit substances, Kano Commission for Information, Mr Muhammad Garba, said this a statement on Wednesday.
He directed that all members of APC interested in contesting in the congress to report at the office of the NDLEA in the state for the screening before 7a.m.
The commissioner said Gov. Ganduje has already mandated the Kano office of the NDLEA to conduct of the tests.
He warned that no contestant would be screened without undergoing the mandatory drug test ahead of the Oct. 16 state Congress of APC
“Government will not hesitate to issue necessary disciplinary measures against anyone found with the trace of illicit substances, including a compulsory recommendation for rehabilitation.” the commissioner said.
“The directive is part of Kano government’s policy, to rid Kano of illicit substances,” he said.
”Similar tests were carried out for contestants into local government election, as well as political appointees including members of the state executive council before offering them portfolio,” Garba said.
The News News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Jan. 8, 13 councillorship aspirants in Kano State tested positive to hard drugs.
According to APC Secretary in Kano, Alhaji Ibrahim Sarina, the ruling party had, through the NDLEA conducted tests on the candidates.
