The Lagos State Judicial Panel has disbursed N262m to victims of police brutality in the state, as it gets set to wind up public hearings.

On Friday, the panel awarded N91 million naira to 16 petitioners after previously compensating 31 petitioners with N171 million.

Those compensated had suffered brutality, harassment, extortion and extrajudicial killings of their loved ones by police officers.

Five petitioners were awarded N10 million each for the extrajudicial killing of their family members on Friday.

One of those compensated was Felix Lucky whose case was opened in December 2020.

He told the panel how a police officer, Sergeant Dagbo shot his brother dead and did not allow him to see his brother’s corpse.

Justice Okuwobi, while giving the decision of the panel, said the petition was meritorious and gave N10 million as compensation.

Late Charles Otoo’s family was also compensated with N10 million after his family members testified how he was shot by officers attached to Ojodu Police Division in the evening of October 21 last year.

Sunday Shoyemi, a consultant pathology at LASUTH, confirmed to the judicial panel that a bullet was extracted from the body of the deceased.

One petition did not receive any compensation because it was lacking in merit.

It was dismissed by the panel.

The panel would be ending its sitting on Tuesday, October 19 after the Lagos State government extended the tenure of the Judicial Panel by three months.

Sittings ought to have ended on April 19 after it was inaugurated on October 19th, 2020 for six months.

However, an extension was given in April for three months until July 19 for it to conclude hearing which was impossible for the panel making it seek another extension till October 19.
