NYSC Director-General Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim: urges corps members to use social media for positive purposes rather than for rumour peddling

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC on Tuesday urged the corps members to use social media for the promotion of unity and other positive purposes rather than for rumour peddling and promotion of hatred.

NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, gave the advice while addressing the 2021 batch “C’’ stream 1 corps members at the formal opening and swearing-in ceremony of the NYSC orientation programme at Mangu in Plateau.

Ibrahim, who was represented by the NYSC State Coordinator in Plateau, Ms Caroline Embu also cautioned corps members against indulging in cult activities, drug abuse and other social vices.

The director-general said the orientation course which was the launchpad for the service year would prepare the corps members physically and mentally for their expected contributions to the progress and development of the nation.

He said that the camp activities would include lessons on the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC: leadership coaching, paramilitary drills, physical training, as well as sensitisation on topical national issues.

He challenged the corps members to participate in the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme (SAED) on camp and become proficient in a particular skill during their service year.

Gen. Ibrahim said such proficiency would equip them for self-development and service which would, in turn, improve their socio-economic status after their service year.

He also urged the corps members to be security conscious at all times and avoid putting themselves in harm’s way.

He encouraged corps members to take the COVID-19 vaccines as the vaccines would keep them safe against the virus.

The director-general also urged them to ensure that they adhered to the COVID-19 safety protocols while on camp.

He thanked State Governments, security agencies and traditional rulers for supporting and creating an environment conducive for NYSC activities.
