Emir urges media to work with historians to project Nigeria’s history, values

The Emir of Gwandu in Kebbi, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu-Bashar, has urged the media to work with historians to project the history and values of all sections of the country.

The emir made the appeal when the new General Manager of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Birnin Kebbi, Malam Muhammad Abubakar paid him a courtesy visit at Abdullahi Fodio palace, Birnin Kebbi on Saturday.

He explained that the collaboration was necessary to counter fake narratives on the history and values of various sections of the country.

The emir said media contents, based on genuine historical information, will enlighten the public, address existing misconceptions and strengthen national unity.

“I want to advise media organisations to consult historians to enlighten and educate Nigerians on their historical and cultural values and tradition, this will go a long way in assisting the young generation.

“This is imperative because those who are not conversant with the actual history tend to give wrong historical data, thereby distorting genuine history, hence the need for professionals to key in, to keep the records straight,” Iliyasu-Bashar said.

Earlier, the NTA general manager said the visit was to seek royal blessings as he assumed duty in the state.

Abubakar lauded the emir for his consistency in promoting peaceful coexistence and encouraging unity and progress in Kebbi and Nigeria at large.

He informed the emir that the station had introduced a new Hausa programme, “Mu leka Masarautunmu”, focused on developments in all emirate councils in the state.

According to him, the first episode will focus on historical and current developments in Gwandu Emirate.
