Seun Kuti son of legendary Afro beat musician and political activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti has said the Afrobeat legend never received any award in his lifetime.

According to Seun, Fela’s award cabinet was empty when he was alive and he began receiving awards after his death.

Seun disclosed this while receiving a posthumous award on behalf of his father recently from the SIGMA club during their 70th anniversary.

Seun also said that after his fathers death, Ebenezer Obey was the only elite musician who visited the family to pay condolence.

“My father did not receive any awards when he was alive because he was not invited to any.

“Fela’s award cabinet was about empty when he was alive. It is such a good thing to have this award on behalf of my family,” he said.

“Chief Ebenezer Obey was the only one that came and gave me money. I was 14 years old at the time and N20,000 was a lot of money.

“That is why when I am asked who my favourite musician is, I am not afraid to say his name (Obey).

“(However), I would not like to diminish the efforts made by the late Victor Uwaifo who was a good friend of my dad too before his death.”
