Jos Correctional Centre in the heart of Jos is under attack by gunmen, according to reports.
Casualties have been reported, but the situation is in a flux.
It was not clear yet those who are behind the attack.
But reports said a combined military and police force was trying to repel the attack.
The prison is located near the police headquarters.
The attackers came in large numbers to free some inmates, but they first faced fireworks from prison guards.
Some reports said repelling forces from outside have entrapped them, by surrounding the besieged prison.
The counter attack is being led by the Special Task Force, STF.
Nigerian prisons have become targets of attacks by armed men in recent months.
In September Kabba Correctional Centre was attacked, with several hundreds of inmates escaping.
In October, Abonlogo correctional facility in Oyo was also attacked.
Many prisoners also escaped.
At the moment close 4,000 prisoners are at large, according the Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola.
