Operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactical Team, SWAT of the Nigeria Police have arraigned a suspect, Stanley Oladapo Feyisayo, 43, before a Lagos Magistrates Court for obtaining N7.5 million under false pretence.
He was arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting at the Yaba Magistrate’s Court, Lagos.
He was accused of collecting the money from one Taiwo Micheal on the pretext of using it to process a Canadian Visa with residence and working permit, a claim the police said the defendant knew to be false.
The scam, according to the police, occurred in October, 2018 when the defendant introduced himself to the complainant as a visa agent and collected the money.
Police further alleged that after the defendant collected the money from the complainant, he fled and switched off his phones.
After waiting for several months without seeing the defendant and the visa, the complainant reported the incident to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP in charge of SWAT, DCP Durosimi Olatoye.
Olatoye detailed his crack team, led by Inspector Uwaeze Onuoha to fish out the defendant anywhere he could be found.
After days of intelligence gathering, the police team tracked the defendant to a hideout in Lagos and arrested him.
Feyisayo, a resident of Ikorodu, Lagos was charged before the court on a three-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.
Police prosecuting counsel, Adegola Phillip informed the court in the charge marked T/03/2021 that the defendant tricked the complainant.
Instead, he converted the money to his use and escaped before he was arrested.
He said the offences committed were punishable under sections 411, 314 (1) (2) and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Feyisayo pleaded not guilty to the charge.
His counsel, Anayo Agbo urged the Court to grant him bail in the most liberal terms.
Magistrates O.N.Y. Ojuromi, granted him N1m bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till 8 December, 2021 for mention.
