Nigeria recorded two deaths and 197 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Friday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said.

The new cases were logged by five states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja..

The 197 cases were a remarkable increase from the 47 cases reported on Friday, Dec. 3.

The increasing cases may be manifesting the warning by he World Health Organisation (WHO) that the Omicron variant is more contagious than the Delta variant.

The new variant has been detected in 38 countries.

“Omicron has some 30 mutations on the spike protein, which is the mechanism used to bind to human cells.

“Some of these mutations are associated with higher transmission and the ability to escape immune protection,” WHO had said.

With the new deaths, NCDC revised the fatality toll to 2,980 and confirmed cases also increased to 214, 513.

So far, 207,403 cases have been discharged, NCDC stated.

Lagos logged 138 cases out of thee new 197.

Rivers has 2, FCT 18, Imo 15, Bauchi and Gombe one each.
