Eighteen men jailed in London

Suspected Nigerian scammer Chinedu, 24 and his partner Radhika, 24 have been arrested in India for duping hundreds of people online to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore (N81.6m).

They dupe their unsuspecting  victims on the pretext of sending them gifts from foreign countries.

According to The Indian Express, the duo were arrested from Delhi’s Uttam Nagar.

It was gathered that Chinedu and Radhika normally posed as celebrity managers and mainly targeted men from Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

They were nabbed by the Kerala Police on Sunday, with the police suspecting that the accused might have earned more than Rs 1.5 crore in the last two years.

The police stated that they three people lodge complaints that of having been duped by the duo in the last two months.

One of the complainants is a college professor who was cheated of Rs 22 lakh, while the other two were cheated of Rs 6 lakh and Rs 4 lakh.

A police officer from Palakkad Cyber Cell in Kerala said all the complainants told them that they received an online friendship request from a woman who regularly posted about her foreign trips and about managing celebrities.

The police said the victims thought the woman was genuine and replied to her messages and that after weeks of chatting, they received gifts from her.

The police said the victims also got calls from a customs official who demanded money to process the gifts at the airport.

The victims ended up paying lakhs of rupees thinking it would be refunded by the woman later. They eventually understood that they had been scammed.

According to the police officer, they have received similar complaints from men in Tamil Nadu, saying that many of the victims were embarrassed and didn’t want to lodge an FIR.

“We started looking for the accused on social media and traced the money trail. We then found that the accused were hiding in Uttam Nagar,” the officer said.

A police team was drafted the area where the accused were arrested.
