Inter Milan have confirmed that midfielder Christian Eriksen has left the club with immediate effect after agreeing to terminate his contract.

Eriksen has been recovering after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020, after which he underwent surgery and was fitted with an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

Serie A has forbidden Eriksen from playing while he still has that device fitted, meaning a return to Inter had looked unlikely ever since the incident.

However, he is able to play in many other leagues across the globe, and out of respect for the 29-year-old, Inter have agreed to free him from his contract and allow him to resume his career elsewhere.

“We can still remember that moment, of excitement mixed with expectation. When you’re waiting for something you know will be good, you almost want to wait a bit longer so you can enjoy it more,” Inter wrote in their farewell letter to Eriksen.

The midfielder has been linked to return to the Premier League while numerous reports have linked him with a move back to the Eredivisie
