The Lagos State Government has vowed not to compromise safety compliance in hotels across the state, saying this is not negotiable.

The Lagos State Safety Commission’s Director-General, Lanre Mojola, who spoke at stakeholders’ forum on hotel safety, on Thursday in Lagos, said hotels never closed and that they are places one visits to have an experience one could not have at home.

In the light of this, Mojola said there was the need to sensitise stakeholders on safe hotels practices, ensure co-operations and proper coordination of work activities within the sector and provide stakeholders with relevant information on any risks to their health and safety.

According to him, the eyes of safety professionals were trained to identify and manage these hazards.

He said this involved carrying out risk assessments such as monitoring wires that are hanging, fuses coming into the building, chair that is broken or the ambience that is not right.

Technical Adviser, Lagos State Safety Commission, Seun Awojobi, called on stakeholders to collaborate to achieve desired result as being envisaged, especially, as far as today’s stakeholders’ forum is concerned.

Awojobi said all hands must be on deck to achieve a more robust and safer hotels in Lagos, saying that all events happening in the hotel should be registered with numbers of eateries in hotel recorded and ensure they work closely with the Commission to have a safer hotels in the state.

Head of Faculty, OSHversity, Ehi Iden, stated that many accidents in hotels could be prevented by taking audits of hotels and equipment in them.

He said accidents commonly associated with hotels included musculoskeletal disorders, food poisoning, drowning, electrocution and fire incidents.

According to Iden, this was why there was need for audit and inspection to be carried out on hotels in the state, particularly as Lagos has the highest number of hotels.

He added that “There needs to be regular auditing and inspections of equipment such as sneeze guards, elevator signs, smoke detectors, wheel chairs and swimming pool signs.

“There should also be safety trainings and relevant certification for employees, collaboration with emergency services for prompt emergency response and all event centres within the hotel facility must be registered.”

Executive Director, Vic Lawrence Associates, Ifeyinwa Osineme, called for more innovative process on the side of the hoteliers to achieve the desired safer hotels in Lagos.
