Engr. Don, accomplice arraigned over alleged N75m land fraud

The police at the Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos have arraigned an engineer, Ezekwere Don, 53, and his alleged accomplice Mopelola Domingos, 38 before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court.

They were arraigned for allegedly obtaining the sum of N75 million from a complainant, Ifeoma Obi under the false pretence of selling five plots of land to him.

Police said the defendant allegedly collected the money from the complainant with a promise to sell the land for him in Ibeju-lekki since 2017 but that the defendant failed to provide the land for the complainant till date and instead converted the money to their use.

Police further alleged that following the development the complainant reported the matter to the Assistant Inspector of Police, AIG in charge of Zone 2 command, who directed his men led by Inspector Collins Oyibe to arrest the defendants.

The defendants were charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on two counts of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

Police prosecuting counsel, Ibrahim Hananu informed the court in the charge marked M/32/2021 that the defendants committed the offence between 25 July, 2017 and 2021 at Ogidan Family of Ogun Ajeh Jakande, Ajeh Lagos.

Haruna told the court that the defendants collected the N75 million from the complainant with a promise to sell five plots of land for him but that the defendant failed to provide the land for him till date.

He said the offences committed were punishable under section 411 and 314(a) and 3 of the criminal law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and Magistrate Gbajumo Ajoku granted them N1, 500, 000 bail each with two sureties each in like sum.

Ayoku adjourned the case till 19 January, 2022 for mention.
