English Premier League

The Premier League has announced that 103 people tested positive in its latest Covid-19 testing round between 20 December to 26 December. 15,186 people were tested.

The league confirmed all 20 clubs have returned to emergency protocols in recent weeks, increasing testing of players and staff to daily lateral flow and twice-weekly PCR tests. Prior to the Omicron variant arriving in the UK, players and staff carried out lateral-flow testing twice a week.

Both the increase in testing and the new variant are behind the sharp increase in positive cases.

Other emergency protocols activated by the league are wearing masks indoors, social distancing and limited treatment time.

“The safety of everyone is a priority and the Premier League is taking all precautionary steps in response to the impact of the Omicron variant of Covid-19,” they said in a statement.
