Terrorism: Turkey issues arrest warrant for 64 IS members

A Turkish prosecutor on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for 64 suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) for activities aimed at financing the group.

Turkey’s Financial Crimes Investigation Board uncovered evidence of bank account transactions and social media posts of the suspects detailing financial assistance to IS members, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The watchdog determined that the suspects collected cash aid through bank accounts to help IS members, who were residing in Turkey and were involved in the group’s activities in conflict zones in Syria.

Ankara designated the IS a terrorist organisation in 2013 and the group had been blamed for a spate of deadly attacks in Turkey since 2015.

Turkey’s counter-terrorism units in response have been conducting operations against the group’s members in the country. (Xinhua/NAN)
