Illegal migrants on Mediterranean Sea

By Agency Report

A group, Doctors Without Borders’ (MSF) rescued almost 70 migrants from distress in the central Mediterranean Sea during another night-time operation.

The crew of the Geo Barents now has just over 360 rescued people on board, MSF said on Friday.

Meanwhile, the team on another ship, the Mare Jonio, said it had requested a safe harbour from the authorities in Italy.

The ship operated by the civilian sea rescuers of Mediterranean Saving Humans is reported to be carrying almost 210 rescued migrants.

The refugees and migrants mostly head for Italy because they want to enter the European Union.

From the coasts of North Africa, a frequently chosen destination is the small Italian island of Lampedusa, which lies between Tunisia and Sicily.

Around 300 migrants arrived there on Friday and were taken on board by Italy’s coastguard, the Adnkronos news agency reported.
