A Federal High Court in Ibadan on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Nurudeen Yusuf to three years jail term over unlawful dealing in marijuana and codeine.

Yusuf was apprehended on July 5, 2021, along Ogbomoso-Ilorin Expressway while transporting 1.29kg of India hemp and 3.91kg of codeine inside his Toyota car.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provision of section 11(C) of the NDLEA Act Cap. N30 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Meanwhile, Yusuf pleaded guilty to the two-count charge bordering on unlawful dealing in narcotics.

Delivering judgment, Justice Uche Agomoh, held that Yusuf was convicted based on the evidence tendered before the court and his plea of guilt.

Agomoh said that the convict did not waste the time and resources of the court before pleading guilty.

“Therefore, the convict is sentenced to one and a half years in prison for each of the two charges.

“All the exhibits found in his possession shall be destroyed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),” the judge said.

She, however, said that the sentence would run concurrently.

Earlier, counsel to the defendant, Mr M.A Yekini urged the court to be lenient in sentencing his client, as he was a first time offender.
