Abia governorship: Obinna Nwosu speaks again

Not Too Young To Run bill fails Nwosu; drops governorship ambition

Obinna Nwosu

Obinna Nwosu withdrew from the 2023 Abia governorship race on Thursday after he found out he was not eligible to contest because he is 32 years old.

The Certified National Accountant had declared his intention to run under the platform of the African Democratic Congress.

However, the 1999 constitution and the Not Too Young to Run bill signed in 2018 stated that the age requirement for governorship is 35.

“My attention has been drawn to the fact that due to the alteration of the Not Too Young To Run bill, I am no longer eligible to run for governor at the age of 32,” Nwosu announced on Thursday.

He noted that as a law-abiding citizen, he has no intention to falsify his age to fit the profile.

Nwosu, however, revealed his next move to PM News on Friday.

He took the responsibility for not doing in-depth research before declaring for the governorship.

He also noted that his move was not a calculated attempt to gain public empathy.

Nwosu said: “This is not a calculated attempt. I take the blame for not doing in-depth research. But I assure you, we have gone back to the drawing board and we will be making a sound decision in a short time.”

Asked if he will challenge the Not Too Young To Run bill in court, Nwosu said:

“We are still making consultations to determine if we will pursue the legal route.”
