The Police Command in Niger has confirmed the killing on Tuesday by gunmen of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Umar Dakingari Mohammed in Nasco, Magama Local Government Area.

The slain DPO was a chief superintendent of police, CSP.

Six other people were also killed. Among them were two other policemen.

Mohammed had served as aide-de-camp to former governor of Kebbi, Usman Saidu Dakingari between 2007 and 2015.

Mr Bala Kuryas, commissioner of police said in Minna that the gunmen attacked the divisional police station in Nasko, killing the three officers.

Kuryas explained that the gunmen rode to Nasco town on motorcycles, killing three police officers and four vigilante.

He explained further that a detachment of police tactical squad and the military personnel has been deployed to the area to track the criminals.

“We appeal to residents in the state to assist the security personnel deployed to the area with reliable information that could help in apprehending the criminals.

“We are all out to deal with any person or group of people undermining the peaceful atmosphere of our state”, he warned.
