Black Wednesday: 20 locals fleeing terrorists attack drown in Niger river

Tragedy struck on Wednesday as locals fleeing from terrorists were reported to have drowned at the Guni-Zumba River in Niger State.

It was gathered that bandits had invaded Guni and Kurgbaku communities of Munya Local Government Area of Niger state on Wednesday, causing many to flee for their lives.

Over 20 locals, including children and women were said to have boarded a boat on Guni-Zumba River to flee from the terrorists.

The boat was overloaded which caused it to capsize in the middle of the river, with over 20 people reportedly drowned.

Shehu Abubakar, a resident, told Daily Trust that the bandits invaded their communities on Wednesday morning, and that in an attempt to flee, some people drowned in Guni-Zumba river.

“Due to overloading, the boat capsized in the middle of the water. For now, we don’t know the number casualties because we have not been able to rescue anybody but I can tell you that over 20 people, including women and children, were involved,” he said.
