Oil theft: Delta Assembly passes forfeiture of property bill

The Delta House of Assembly has passed the state forfeiture of property bill, which seeks to outlaw illegal dealings in crude oil and provides for the forfeiture of property used for storage of suspected stolen crude in the state.

This followed the third reading of the bill during the plenary in Asaba on Friday.

Majority Leader, Ferguson Onwo moved for the suspension of Order 12, of House rules 82 and 83 enabling the House to pass the bill which was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.

When signed into law, the bill would help check oil bunkering and ensure that those who use or provide their property for illegal bunkering were held liable.

After passage, the Speaker of the Assembly commended the lawmakers for their cooperation and speedy passage of the bills.

He also commended Governor Ifeanyi OKowa for forwarding the executive bill to the House and also thanked his colleagues for the quick passage.
