CBN office on fire in Benue.

There was a fire incident on Thursday morning in some parts of the Makurdi branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Benue State.

According to multiple reports, the fire incident started around 7am but was quickly put off by men of the Federal Fire Service.

Although the bank is yet to acknowledge the incident, sources say the fire started from the building’s power section.

Eyewitnesses said they noticed the fire at the back of the bank which is located in the Old GRA, adjacent to the Benue State Government House, Makurdi, Benue State capital.

“The fire started from the power house and the the security quickly called the fire fighters who came and put it off, it does not escalate to the main building,” an eyewitness said.

Confirming the incident, Donald Ikyaaza, Director of the Benue State Fire Service, said he received a distress call about the fire incident and promptly deployed his men to the scene.

“It was actually a huge fire which started at the company’s fuel dome but my men rushed to the scene and put out the fire before it could spread to other parts of the bank. Everywhere is calm now,” Ikyaaza said.

The Benue State Police Command while confirming the incident said it had deployed personnel to the bank to prevent any form of looting.

The spokesperson of the command, Sewuese Anene said although the source of the fire incident was not disclosed, the primary responsibility of the police, was to secure the bank against any form of breach.
