The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has urged the Abia State Government and security authorities to step up efforts to secure Dr. Uwadinachi Iweha’s release.

The association’s President, Dr. Uche Ojinmah made the call in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

On June 6, Iweha, a 74-year-old former Chief Medical Director of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) Aba, was abducted in front of his home in Umuajameze Umuopara, Umuahia South Local Government Area (LGA).

The kidnapping was condemned by Ojinmah, who also urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to develop a policy to avoid the kidnapping of doctors, other health care workers, and their families.

According to him, such a policy will lessen Nigeria’s medical brain drain.

”We call on the kidnappers to search their conscience and see if it is right to keep in captivity an elder that has spent most of his life in the service of humanity.

”The Nigerian Medical Association is looking forward to receiving the news of the safe release of Dr. Iweha. We shall not take kindly to any more waste of scarce medical skills,” Ojinmah said.
