Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has said he made a mistake in picking his running mate for the presidency in 1999.
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar was Obasanjo’s running mate in 1999.
Atiku is now the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
Obasanjo spoke in Abeokuta at a leadership and entrpreneurship mentoring session with selected school students.
The former president said he would not say he did not make mistakes, saying he made many of them.
According to him, one thing that had happened to him was that God had never disappointed him, as that was very important.
“For instance, one of the mistakes I made was picking a number two when I was going to become President. But because it is a genuine mistake, God saved me out of it,” he said.
Obasanjo also said he made a mistake by not taking asylum’s in the United States when the late despotic ruler, General Sani Abacha wanted to arrest him.
He explained that when Abacha wanted to arrest him, the American ambassador told him that they would arrest him and that America had asked that he should be given asylum.
Obasanjo said he turned it down and said he would come home, saying that it could have been a mistake because he could have lost his life.
He said God had always come to his aid when he made mistakes.
