Rivers: FG flags off training for stream 2 Monitors of NSIPs

The Federal Government has flagged off the training of Stream 2 of independent monitors on implementation of its National Social Investment Programmes (NSIPs) in Rivers State.

Speaking during the flag-off of the training exercise on Thursday, in Port Harcourt, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiyya Umar Farouq explained that the Independent Monitors are among one of the most important components of the National Social Investment Programmes, NSIPs.

The Minister therefore tasked the Stream 2 Independent Monitors chosen in Rivers to be ready to contribute to effectiveness of the programme.

She said: “Today’s programme marks the beginning of the national training and on-boarding of additional 3,000 men and women who will serve as Stream 2 monitors in Rivers State.

“They will be given the prerequisite training and receive engagement letters and Tablets as working tools for monitoring the programme.

“The NSIP Independent Monitors are responsible for monitoring the NSIP Programmes in their communities, schools, households and market clusters with the focus on ensuring that the primary objectives of the NSIPs are achieved.

Farouk who was represented by Mrs Itoro Duku,the Team Leader for the training stated that the programme was created in 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration with the core mandate of alleviating poverty in the country.

Farouq stated that Rivers State is one of the states that the programme has been flagged off across 36 states of Nigeria to achieve the core mandate of the President in poverty alleviation.

According to her, Stream One of the programme had 4,452 Independent Monitors trained across the country in February and March 2021,while stream 2 would be training 3,000 monitors across the country this year.

She advised them to use the resources and knowledge gained from the intensive training to work effectively after the exercise.

She urged the Independent Monitors not to intimidate any of the Beneficiaries of the programme, they will meet in the field as any of them found wanting will be laid off from the programme.

Similarly, Mrs Uche Uriri, the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Women Affairs, urged the participants to pay attention to the training and make use of the rare opportunity.

Uriri said that the training would give them edge over other Nigerians that were not opportune to do the programme.

She applauded Federal Government for the Initiative of the programme.

One of the trainees, Mr Godwin Jumo from Tai Local Government Area applauded the President for the initiative and urged Nigerians to embrace the programme.

Another participants, Ijeoma Nwadibe, said that she would use the tools effectively to achieve the aim of the programme.

Nwadibe appealed to Federal Government to continue with the programme to alleviate poverty in the country.
