Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Dr. Peter Obi  has lashed out at the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for failing to honour agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Obi, in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Monday evening, decried the continued strike by the lecturer, asking the government to invest in the nation’s education sector.

He lamented the prolonged absence of Nigerian tertiary students from the classroom since February 14.

Obi criticised the Federal Government for failing to honout the 2009 agreements reached with the striking lecturers since 1999.

He also called for the review of Professors’ salaries, saying it does not make sense for councilors to earn more than university lecturers.

On security, Obi said to improve the security situation in Nigeria, as President, he would ensure the economy works and more people were pulled out of poverty.

“The more you remove people out of poverty, the more you reduce criminality. It is critical and important, as long as the economy continues to head south like we are seeing today, your criminality will be rising,” he said.

Obi added that other measures needed to be put in place including proper man power and standard equipment which would increase productivity.

He stated that he had said it repeatedly that if he had the opportunity, every state would be responsible for their security.

“I will make sure that the governors are given the powers to secure their state. Even if we have federal police there, they will be responsible and reporting to the governor.

“Additionally, the state will be allowed to have their own security system if the need be,” he stated.
