Members of the Batch “B” Stream II of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), posted to Edo State have been charged to deploy social media for national unity and development, instead of using same for fuelling hatred and disunity in the country.

The Director-General of the Corps, Brig.-Gen. Muhammad Fadah, gave the charge on Tuesday at Okada, Ovia North-East local government area of the state, during the swearing-in of the Corps members.

Fadah who was represented at the event by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Abiodun Olubukola, urged the corps members to distance themselves from cultism, drug abuse and other social vices in order not to jeopardize their service year

“I urged you to avoid using social media for spreading fake news, fuelling hatred and other negative purposes. Instead, deploy same for the promotion of national unity and development.

“I encourage you to avail yourselves of the opportunity for self-employment offered through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, since white-collar jobs are not readily available,” he said.

Fadah however appealed for the support of all stakeholders in the call for the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund, which has reached advance stage of legislation.

He noted that the fund will enhance the smooth operation of the scheme, especially the challenges of infrastructure and providing start-up capital for corps members.
