Manchester United have bounced back after two successive defeats to beat Liverpool 2-1 in a crucial match at Old Trafford on Monday.

The Red Devils had lost their two opening games in the English Premier League this season and needed to win to boost the morale of their fans.

Liverpool had also drawn their first two matches of the season and needed to take a positive result at Old Trafford.

But it was the host that needed it most, winning on 2-1 in an explosive encounter.

Jadon Sancho opened scoring for United on 16 minutes after an assist from Anthony Elanga.

Elanga teed up Sancho inside the box and he rolled the ball into the bottom left corner and past Alisson.

Marcus Rashford grabbed the second goal for United on 53 minutes.

He was released by Anthony Martial, he surged into the box and smashed a great shot into the top corner after a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

There was an anxious moment of waiting for VAR to decide if the goal would stand or an offside.

But Referee Michael Oliver signalled that there was no offside and the goal stood.

Mohamed Salah scored a consolation goal for Liverpool on 81 minutes, after he got to the rebound inside the six-yard box and produced a header.

He managed to put the ball inside the right post to make it 2-1.

United held on for the needed win which will bring back revival and confidence in the team.

Cristiano Ronaldo was an unused substitute all through the period of the match.
