The Chartered Institute of Finance and Control, Nigeria (CIFCN), has formally conferred Fellowship status on Ernest Nmutaka Chikwendu, honoring his exemplary contributions to financial governance, compliance, and digital banking innovation.

The recognition, awarded in 2022, underscores Chikwendu’s two-decade career in building risk-resilient financial systems across Africa. His work in designing governance frameworks, leading compliance strategies, and delivering enterprise solutions has positioned him as a thought leader in the sector.

Accepting the Fellowship, Chikwendu emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in financial management. “Finance without governance is chaos,” he remarked. “As we embrace digital transformation, we must ensure that controls, compliance, and ethical standards remain uncompromised.”

Chikwendu has held senior leadership positions at Citibank, FCMB, and Standard Chartered Bank, where he championed operational risk management and digital channel optimization across 15 countries.

In his current role as the Director of SME Development (Banking & Financial Services) at Icon Global Services Ltd, he oversees SME development programmes across Nigeria, partnering with DFIs to deploy more than ₦100 billion in SME-focused credit.

The Institute highlighted his pivotal role in aligning financial institutions with Nigeria’s recapitalization and inclusion reforms, particularly through frameworks that integrate API-driven systems and credit guarantees.

Colleagues and industry stakeholders congratulated Chikwendu, noting that his induction reflects both his professional integrity and his contribution to advancing Nigeria’s financial architecture
