No less than eleven people have lost their lives in Jumbam and Kaliyari communities in Tarmuwa Local Government Area, Yobe state, due to devastating floods.

Governor Mai Mala Buni inspected the communities with the use of a helicopter, as all roads leading to them were destroyed.

Shortly after the aerial inspection, Buni directed the state’s Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Umar Dudaye, to immediately rehabilitate the road leading to the area.

He also directed the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to ensure that all victims of the disaster were given relief materials and those admitted to the hospital received free treatment.

“We have to act fast and smoothly, to restore life in these communities,” the governor said.”

Alhaji Mohammed Goje, SEMA Executive Secretary, confirmed that the death toll from Saturday’s boat mishap in the area had risen to 11.

He added that the flood, triggered by torrential rains, had destroyed 180 houses and washed off 752 hectares of farmlands.

Two passenger boats bound for Babangida weekly market capsized in a flood wave in the area.
