Former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has called for peaceful co-existence among Nigerians to ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2023.

Babangida, who spoke with newsmen on Friday in Minna, said peaceful political atmosphere would ensure smooth implementation of electoral process.

He also urged the electorate to shun all kind of violence and thuggery towards the conduct of the elections.

Babangida further urged the younger generation to imbibe the culture of knowing more about historical perspective of Nigeria and the effort of its founding fathers in bringing the country together.

“Seven years after the independence, we went through went through a civil war, and came out of it quite successfully in the sense that the country remains one from 1967 to 1970.

“Since then, all efforts, government both civilian and the Military were all engaged in trying to keep the country united and so far we are still a united country,” Babangida said.

He lauded the efforts of the present government willing to bring an end to the insecurity challenges bedeviling some parts of the country.

He added that operations required both the support of the public and the law enforcement agencies .

“Nigerians must support security agencies with require intelligence information that could aid in the ongoing fighting against insurgency and other criminal elements,” he said.

On the ongoing ASUU strike, the former Military President said the lecturers’ strike was part of the challenges of governance, and that the government was willing to find a lasting solution to the menace.

“To the best of my knowledge lots of effort are being done by the government in finding solutions to the problems.

“I know it will be found, it’s a question of time, as long as people are willing to talk and engage themselves in trying to provide a solution, definitely, a solution will come,” he said.
