Johnson pulled out of the race to succeed Liz Truss as PM on Sunday night, paving the way for Sunak, who is now the clear favourite for the position.
He took to his Instagram page on Sunday night to commend Johnson for his achievement.
According to him, Johnson delivered Brexit and the great vaccine roll-out, adding that he led the country through some of the toughest challenges UK has ever faced.
He said although he had decided not to run for PM again, he hoped he continued to contribute to public life at home and abroad.
He wrote: “Boris Johnson delivered Brexit and the great vaccine roll-out. He led our country through some of the toughest challenges we have ever faced, and then took on Putin and his barbaric war in Ukraine. We will always be grateful to him for that.
“Although he has decided not to run for PM again, I truly hope he continues to contribute to public life at home and abroad.”
