The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has approved an increase in the quota for admission of medical students to the Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State.
Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, Vice-Chancellor of the university, made the announcement on Thursday while speaking with newsmen at the 21st Inaugural Lecture of the institution.
The quota, Ezemonye said, was increased to 120 from 75.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture was delivered by Prof. Pauline Ekemma Aligwekwe of the Social and Cultural Anthropology Department of the University.
NAN reports that the lecture had as its title: “The Significance of the Interaction between Science/Technology and Religion in Society; Can Science Stand in Apposition to Religion in a Situation of High Religious Consciousness?”
The vice-chancellor commended the council for re-accrediting the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) programme in the school for another five years.
He also claimed that the institution was partnering with renowned Ukrainian Universities for a joint training programme for students displaced by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The vice-chancellor added that the programme would be under strict compliance with National Universities Commission (NUC) Guidelines on transnational education.
“This is with particular reference to students currently displaced by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“The universities include V.N Karazin Kharkiv University, Ivano-Frankivsk University and Lviv University of Business and Law in Ukraine,” he said.
Ezemonye noted that an inaugural lecture provides a professor with an opportunity to inform colleagues, the university community and the public of his or her works.
