The Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has urged journalists working in the State to give adequate reportage to government activities so as to liberate people from the shackles of ignorance and misinformation.

Bello made this known on Wednesday, while speaking at his maiden media interaction with the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Government House, Lokoja. Chapels at the meeting were Correspondents, Federated and NUJ Executives.

The Governor noted that the unusual circumstance of his emergence in governance naturally drew widespread interests and the need to do what is right.

But he noted that seven years in the saddle, the people now better understand his good intentions.

He said a lot may have gone wrong in the past, but media practitioners should brace up for the challenge ahead by focusing on the government and seeking clarifications from the right source, for unbiased reports, promising to look into their welfare.

“Without saying much, I think I am just being who I am. If you don’t praise sing me or report what I’m doing, I will not do any less. If you report me well I will not do any less. But reporting it, is for our own good and the good of Kogi.

“Challenges are bound to come. We take them on, as they come. I urge you to report what we are doing, so that the people can know. Where we go wrong, tell me. We all need ourselves. You need me and I need you.”

Bello commended facilitator of the meeting, Mrs Yemi Kolapo, for her tenacity and putting her wealth of experience at the service of his administration and the state.

Earlier, NUJ state Chairman Momoh Adeiza Jimoh told the Governor about the commitment of Journalists to factors that promote good government and proper information flow. He said the media is a partner in progress and assured the Governor of the selfless services of members of the profession.
